Cameron Indoor Stadium

The facility that the Blue Devil basketball team calls home is Cameron Indoor Stadium, located on the Duke University campus at Durham, North Carolina. The name of the field comes from former basketball coach Eddie Cameron, who is said to have worked on the original plans for the venue. Originally known as Duke Indoor Stadium, the arena opened in 1940 and costing approximately $400,000 to construct. The first game ever held at the venue was on January 6, 1940, as the Blue Devils defeated Princeton by the score of 36-27. Cameron Indoor Stadium was officially given its current moniker in the 1970s, and although at one time it could house more than 12,000 fans, it now has a maximum capacity of just over 9,300 "Cameron Crazies" as they are known across the country. Recently, the court area has been dubbed Coach K Court in honor of current Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Those Crazies at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Through the 2002 season, the Blue Devils had an all-time record of 632-139 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. A large reason for their success, in addition to all of the talented teams they have fielded over the years of course, is the rowdy crowd of Duke supporters that have taunted and verbally abused opposing players and teams for many years. Their antics are legendary. During one 1996 game against Lehigh, the fans pummeled a skinny, spectacled player with chants of "Urkel" (Jaleel White's characters on the old TV show "Family Matters"). When Grant Hill's parents attended the Duke star's final game, they were greeted with chants of "One more kid! One more kid!" They have poked fun at Shaquille O'Neal's posterior, referee calls, North Carolina player Steve Hale's punctured lung, Spud Webb's height and the legal problems of countless opposing players and coaches. No question about it -- Duke basketball fans are a breed all their own.
